It’s Sunday morning.
I’d say that calls for a hearty breakfast.
Turn on the oven and let it get good and hot.
Pull Aunt Jo’s turquoise bowl from off its place on the shelf.
Flour and baking powder, a tablespoon of this, a teaspoon of that, sift it softly and then…
Cut in the butter, there’s a rhythm to it.
Last but not least, pour in the buttermilk and mix it just so.
Turn it out and pat it by hand, not too much.
Biscuits should be light, fluffy like a cloud in a morning sky.
Into the oven they go.
And while they bake get out the cast iron skillet.
Brown the sausage til it sizzles…
The kitchen is scenting the whole house…
A pinch to season…maybe two.
A dash of flour, a few cups of milk…and whisk…and whisk…
The biscuits are done and the sausage gravy’s complete.
Only one thing left to do now….
